As you step into the New Year and are putting your Christmas decorations away, your living space may feel a little bare. Add some life back into your home and fill in the empty space where your Christmas tree once resided with a beautiful, large tropical plant!

Here are some medium to large houseplant options that will help give your home a makeover after the holidays.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae or nicolai)

A stunning tropical plant known for its unusual orange or white flowers, which resemble birds in flight. It is sometimes mistaken for a banana tree because of its large leaves.

Pot Size & Price: 10” White Bird of Paradise ($39.99)
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light
Water: Water when soil becomes dry to the touch, approximately every 1 to 2 weeks
Height: 3 to 8 feet tall

Yucca Cane (Yucca elephantipes)

Looking for a houseplant that will make a statement? With its sharp, pointed leaves and upright canes, Yucca Canes have a very striking appearance!

Pot Size & Price: 12” Yucca Cane ($65.00), 10” Yucca Cane ($50.00)
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. If exposed to direct sunlight the leaves may burn.
Water: Water when soil becomes dry to the touch, approximately every 1 to 2 weeks
Height: 3 to 8 feet
Other: You may see offshoots at the base of your Yucca Cane. These small plants, also known as pups, can be removed and planted in fresh potting soil if you wish to grow more yucca plants. If the pup is pale in colour it is not quite ready to be removed from the parent plant. Once it is dark green it is safe to remove, but it is best to wait until the fall to repot any yucca pups.

Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)

A popular houseplant that you will often see in home decorating shows and magazines as their dark green, heavily veined, violin-shaped leaves are quite appealing.

Pot Size & Price: 10” Fiddle Leaf Fig Standard ($60.00), 10” Fiddle Leaf Fig Bush Form ($39.99)
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. If exposed to direct sunlight the leaves may burn. If the plant is not receiving enough light, it will drop leaves.
Water: Water when soil becomes dry to the touch, approximately every 1 to 2 weeks.  Be sure to water thoroughly and consistently. Fiddle Leaf Figs prefer the same amount of water at regular intervals.
Height: 3 to 10 feet
Other: Fiddle Leaf Figs do not like cold drafts. Do not place your Fiddle Leaf Fig near an air conditioner, vent or a window/door that is opened regularly.

This Dracaena has thick stems and long green leaves with light yellow/green stripes running down the center of them.
