Dress up your patio with a statement planter that incorporates lush, heat-loving tropical plants and vibrant coloured annuals! Or choose a succulent or cacti planter for a low-maintenance look. If you have a shady spot that needs sprucing up, explore our fern and foliage planter options.
Please note that greenhouse-grown tropical plants need time to transition to full sun when placed outdoors. Slowly acclimate your sun-loving tropical planters to the desired location on your patio by gradually increasing the amount of direct sunlight they receive over a period of one to two weeks.
To keep your plants thriving on hot days, follow these watering practices:
💧Know your plants! Different plants have different water needs. Vegetable plants, plants in containers, and newly planted plants typically need more water. Drought-tolerant plants, like sedums and cacti, need less water. Always read and follow plant care tags!
💧Check soil moisture! To test if your plant needs water, stick your finger a few inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it is time to water. For hanging baskets, try the weight test. If the hanging basket feels light and lifts easily, it needs water. A well-watered basket will feel noticeably heavier.
💧Water early! Water your plants in the morning to help them absorb moisture before the most intense heat of the day sets in. If you water your plants midday, the water will evaporate more quickly. If your plants show signs of wilting or dehydration, water them immediately, regardless of the time of day.
💧Water thoroughly! Ensure that the entire root ball of your plants is saturated. For containers or hanging baskets, water until it drains from the holes at the bottom. In your garden beds, use a lower water volume over a longer period for full saturation.
💧Avoid overhead watering! Excess water on the foliage can promote fungal issues, like powdery mildew. Always water at the base of the plant.
💧Use mulch wisely! Mulch can help retain moisture, but it can also prevent water from reaching plant roots. When watering mulched areas, ensure that water reaches the soil.
💧Caring for established plants! Plants that have been in the ground for a year or more generally require less frequent watering, but they still need attention during dry, hot weather. Most well-established perennials, trees, and shrubs benefit from a thorough watering once or twice a week.
If you are concerned about overwatering or underwatering your plants, try a digital moisture meter that checks soil moisture at the root level!
