Native plants are fascinating for both novice and seasoned gardeners to explore! If you’re unfamiliar with them, we will answer some common questions below.
What is a native plant? The answer to this question is not a straightforward one. To some, the strict definition of a native plant is a plant that is growing in the wild or a plant that is grown from seed gathered from plants growing in the wild. To some, once that seedling is given a name and propagated for sale, it is no longer native. Many also consider seedlings and cultivars of these seedlings to be native. These plants are often referred to as native cultivars. A native cultivar is a plant that results from when native parent plants are used to create a new cultivar.
What are some of the benefits of growing native cultivars?
- They attract native pollinators, such as monarchs and bees, by providing food and habitat.
- Native cultivars bring birds into your natural space.
- When provided with the right environment for adaptation, they thrive and create less work for yourself, as native plants tend to be lower maintenance than non-native ones.
At Vermeer’s, we carry a variety of native cultivars. The trees, shrubs, and perennials pictured below are only some of the ones we carry. If you are looking for something specific, feel free to reach out to us.
