Spring is officially here! That means it is time to prep your lawn and get it in great shape for summer. If you’re wondering what steps you can take to foster healthy lawn growth this spring, follow the guidelines outlined below.

Fertilizing

Fertilizer is a sure-fire way to wake up your hibernating lawn and care for it after a long, cold winter. Lawn fertilizer is also necessary if you want your lawn to look lush and stay green all season long as it promotes strong root development and helps eliminate weeds.

While we highly recommend the products in our ‘Going for the Green’ fertilizer program, Scotts has some other great lawn fertilizer options. Check out Scotts Turf Builder Green MAX Lawn Food (5.7 kg bag for $25.99) and Scotts Turf Builder PRO Lawn Food (5.2 kg bag for $22.49).

To apply lawn fertilizer evenly, be sure to use a hand or push lawn spreader, walk at a steady pace, and slightly overlap each pass. Please refer to fertilizer packaging for any additional instructions.

Top Dressing

Better soil makes a better lawn! Top dressing, which is the process of adding a layer of soil to the top of your lawn, improves soil quality and provides extra nutrients to both new and existing grass roots.

Consider using Scotts Soil Build’r (4.2 kg bag for $22.99) to give your soil and lawn a boost by encouraging water and nutrient retention, reducing soil compaction, and increasing beneficial microbial activity. This top dressing is fast and easy to apply!

If you are hesitant to use this Scotts top dressing alternative and would rather apply top dressing the old-fashioned way, we would recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Enriched Lawn Soil (28.3 L bag for $6.99). Before applying, prepare the area by removing dead grass and weeds and loosen the top ¼ inch of soil with a rake. Then spread about 1 inch of Scotts Lawn Soil evenly over the area. Once you have successfully top dressed your lawn it is time to overseed using a hand or push lawn spreader!

Lawn Tip: Use Scotts Weed B Gon MAX ready-to-use spray (1L bottle for $15.99) to effectively kill broadleaf weeds in your lawn. It can be applied directly to small patches and individual weeds as a spot treatment.

Overseeding & Choosing Grass Seed

If your lawn is riddled with bare spots or is looking a little tired and thin after winter, you can help bring your grass back to life by overseeding. Overseeding is the process of applying grass seed over existing grass.

While overseeding certainly helps to fill in visible bare patches, it also helps to keep your lawn looking thick and healthy overall. Spring and fall are the best times to overseed. Grass seed germinates best when temperatures are consistently 15°-26°C (60° to 80°F).

Before overseeding, it is important to select the right grass seed mixture to ensure that it will tolerate certain growing conditions. If your yard has varying degrees of sun and shade, go with Scotts Turf Builder Quick + Thick Grass Seed Sun-Shade Mix (1.2 kg bag for $23.99). If your lawn does not receive a lot of sunlight, choose Scotts Dense Shade Mix (1.2 kg bag for $23.99). Do you have areas in your lawn where grass just doesn’t want to grow? Try Scotts Tough and Resilient Mix (1.2 kg bag for $23.99). Lastly, if you would like a nice-looking lawn without the constant maintenance, Scotts Low Maintenance Mix (1.2 kg bag for $23.99) is the grass seed for you!

Lawn Tip: An application of Evolve Organic Dog Spot Prevent (3.5 kg bag for $19.99) will help balance the pH of your soil, so that dog urine has much less of a negative impact on your lawn.

Watering

Be sure to water your newly planted grass regularly. Ensure that the top inch of soil stays moist (not overwatered) to allow your new grass seed to germinate. Do not let the soil dry out!

Even after new grass has started to grow, it is best to keep up with regular watering until you have mowed your lawn a few times. Once your new grass seed is established, you can go back to a normal watering routine.

Mowing

Mowing new grass too early can damage your seedlings and undo all your hard work! If you have overseeded your entire lawn, you can continue to mow as needed, but you may want to limit how often you mow your lawn to reduce foot traffic on new seedlings.

If you applied grass seed to bare soil, avoid mowing your lawn until seedlings have reached a height of 3 or 3 ½ inches. Don’t forget, the best time to mow your lawn is when the grass is dry!
