Spring is in the air! That means it is time to prep your lawn and get it in great shape for summer. If you’re wondering what steps you can take to foster healthy lawn growth this spring, follow the guidelines outlined below.
Fertilizing
Fertilizer is a sure-fire way to wake up your hibernating lawn and care for it after a long, cold winter. Lawn fertilizer is also necessary if you want your lawn to stay green and look lush all season long as it promotes strong root development and helps eliminate weeds. Scotts Turf Builder PRO Lawn Food (32-0-4) is a great lawn fertilizer that we carry both in-store and online. It comes in a 5.2 kg bag for $22.49 and covers approximately 4,306 square feet. To apply lawn fertilizer evenly, be sure to use a hand or push lawn spreader, walk at a steady pace, and slightly overlap each pass. Please refer to the package for any additional instructions.
Top Dressing
Better soil makes a better lawn! Top dressing, the process of adding a layer of soil to the top of your lawn, improves soil quality and provides extra nutrients to both new and existing grass roots. Consider using Scotts Soil Build’r to give your soil and lawn a boost by encouraging water and nutrient retention, reducing soil compaction, and increasing beneficial microbial activity. This top dressing is fast and easy to apply with a lawn spreader! A 4.2 kg bag covers approximately 1,320 square feet and is available in-store or online for $22.99.
If you are hesitant to use this new Scotts top dressing alternative and would rather apply top dressing the old-fashioned way, we would recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Enriched Lawn Soil. A 28.3 L bag can be purchased in-store or online for $6.99. Before applying, prepare the area by removing dead grass and weeds and loosen the top ¼ inch of soil with a rake. Then spread about 1 inch of Scotts Turf Builder Enriched Lawn Soil evenly over the area. Once you have successfully top dressed your lawn it is time to overseed using a hand or push lawn spreader!
Overseeding
If your lawn is riddled with bare spots or it is looking a little tired and thin after winter, you can help bring your grass back to life by overseeding. Overseeding is the process of applying grass seed over existing grass. While overseeding certainly helps to fill in visible bare patches, it also helps to keep your lawn looking thick and healthy overall. Spring and fall are the best times to overseed. Grass seed germinates best when temperatures are consistently 15°-26°C (60° to 80°F).
Choosing Grass Seed
Before overseeding, it is important to select the right grass seed mixture to ensure that it will tolerate certain growing conditions. For instance, some grass seed mixtures thrive in sun while others do better in the shade. Here are some grass seed mixtures by General Seed Company to choose from:

Caring For Newly Planted Grass: Watering
Be sure to water your newly planted grass regularly. Ensure that the top inch of soil stays moist (not drowned) to allow your new grass seed to germinate. Do not let the soil dry out. Even after your new grass has started to grow, it is best to keep up with regular watering until you have mowed your lawn one or two times. Once your new grass seed is established, you can go back to a normal watering routine.
Caring For Newly Planted Grass: Mowing
Mowing new grass too early can damage your seedlings and undo all your hard work! If you have overseeded your entire lawn, you can continue to mow as needed, but you may want to limit how often you mow your lawn to reduce foot traffic on new seedlings. If you applied grass seed to bare soil, avoid mowing your lawn until seedlings have reached a height of 3 or 3 ½ inches. Don’t forget, the best time to mow your lawn is when the grass is dry!
