Are the grey days getting you down? Are you dreaming of your summer garden? Come into Vermeer’s and check out our great selection of seeds! We have a wide variety of seeds in stock from arugula to zinnias.

Here are some tips for getting a head start on your dream garden by starting seeds indoors:

Select your seeds. While doing so, keep in mind the size of your garden and the light conditions of the area you would like to grow plants in. At Vermeer’s, we carry seeds from well-known companies like OSC, Livingston, Aimers, Seeds of Change, Weston and West Coast Seeds. This includes GMO free seeds.

Seed packets range in price from $1.89 to $14.99 each. Price is dependent on the company, the type of seed and the quantity.

Select your containers. Seed-starter trays are ideal for starting seeds. Jiffy pots or pellets can be used and then planted directly into the ground in the spring. We currently have a package of twelve 2.25″ plantable pots made of coconut coir available in-store for $2.49. We also have a package of eight 3.25″ plantable pots for $2.99. A package of twenty jumbo pellets is $5.99.

As seedlings mature, be sure to increase the container size to support root growth and the development of sturdy leaves.

Select a growing medium. A soilless soil mixture (a mixture of peat moss and perlite) or a seed starting potting mix is ideal. Fafard’s Connaisseur Potting Soil for Indoor Plants (5L bag for $4.99) or Organic Seed Starting Mix by Pro-Mix (9L bag for $9.99) are both great options. They can be purchased in-store while quantities last.

Make sure to moisten the growing medium before you plant seeds in the pots. Once seeds are planted, a spray mister is recommended for watering, so as to not drown the seed or wash the seeds away.

Timing. The information outlined on the back of your chosen seed packet will let you know when to sow your seeds indoors, how long it takes for them to germinate and when you can sow them outdoors. If you’re looking for another fantastic resource that you can use to determine when it is best to plant your desired seeds, check out this chart from West Coast Seeds.

Find a well-lit area in your home. It is best to plant and place your seeds near a south-facing window. If your home does not have enough light, consider using a grow light and a timer. If you are interested in purchasing or learning more about grow lights, we recommend contacting or visiting Northern Lights Green Supply in Thorold.

Harden seedlings off. You can do this by moving the pots or trays outside into a protected area for a few hours each day about a week before they are ready for planting. Gradually expose your seedlings to more sun and wind over the course of the week. Once there is no longer a risk of frost, seedlings can be planted in the garden.

We hope these tips will help you grow a successful garden this year and for years to come!
